So we need to talk about how great Michel Faber is. Honestly, it’s almost ridiculous – everything of his that I read is flawless. This book (with GLORIOUS, SHINY cover) is no exception. It’s a recently reissued collection of short stories, and I can’t even begin to describe how good it is. His range is mind blowing: so many different, often slightly surreal, characters (one of the protagonists is a severed hand), all conjured perfectly, and with an astonishing lightness of touch. Even when the stories are a little macabre or melancholy, there’s nothing heavy handed in his style, no sense that you’re being herded into a corner full of feelings. Instead, there’s breathing room, a bit of space for your own imagination – and the book is so much more powerful for it. Basically, I ❤️ Michel Faber 4EVA.
